“Can you pick up my van today?”
That was the text I received from an East Vancouver owner whose old minivan was parked on the street near Trout Lake without insurance. He had bought a new car and wanted the van moved that day.
I told him I could come and asked what time worked. He said 6 p.m. I asked him to send the address and told him I would see him then. He was looking for someone who could help with the vehicle when he wanted it moved.
The owner had bought the minivan when he first came to Canada. He drove it for eight years, and its odometer eventually reached 436,981 km. It still ran, although it was not running particularly well. He had a replacement car now and was ready to have the van recycled.
He thought I was coming to pick it up for free. He did not know I would pay him for it. This is one real junk car removal job in East Vancouver, from the first text to delivery at our recycling partner.
Can an old van be picked up in East Vancouver on the day I call?
Sometimes. I could take this job on the day the owner texted, and we agreed on 6 p.m. Same-day pickup depends on where the vehicle is, what equipment the job requires, and what else is already on my schedule.
When you contact Jay’s Junk Car Towing, tell me where the car is parked and when you would like it moved. I can then give you a real answer about availability. If I cannot meet the time you have in mind, I would rather tell you that than promise a truck that will not arrive.
The Trout Lake owner made arranging the job easy. He asked whether I could come that day, gave me a time, and sent the address. I knew where I was going and what he wanted done. There was no reason for him to arrange a separate tow just to move the van somewhere else first.
His vehicle still ran, but that is not a requirement for calling me. If your car does not start, tell me when you get in touch. That changes how I plan the loading, and I can explain what is possible for your location.
What happened at the Trout Lake pickup?

I arrived before our agreed time. The minivan was parked across the street from Trout Lake, and parking the truck was easy. Because I was early, Ruby and I took a little walk through the park before meeting the owner. She enjoyed all the smells, and there were plenty of Canada geese around.
When we met, we talked and joked. He showed me his new car. Then he went through the minivan and took out some belongings he still wanted. We spent a little longer there because we were having a conversation.
He had driven that van for eight years. Even when somebody is ready to let a vehicle go, it makes sense to give them time to check it one last time. A glove box, door pocket, or cargo area can hold things an owner forgot were there. I waited while he finished.
After that, the minivan was ready to load. Since it still ran, I drove it onto the flat deck and secured it for transport. I took it to our recycling partner, where it could be driven off the truck. It travelled to the facility on my truck. I did not drive an uninsured van across Vancouver.
Will a junk car buyer pay for a van that still runs?
Yes, depending on the vehicle. This owner thought he was arranging a free pickup. When he learned he would receive money for the minivan, he said, “Oh, I didn’t know I was getting some money.”
He was paid for a vehicle that was going for scrap. The money helped with his new car. I am leaving the amount out of this post because another vehicle’s offer could be different, and I do not want this one job to sound like a price guarantee.
A vehicle does not have to stop running before an owner decides to have it removed. This van had served its owner for years. He had already replaced it and wanted the old one taken away. Being able to drive it onto the flat deck made loading straightforward, but it was still an old vehicle he no longer intended to use.
If your car runs, tell me. If it starts but runs poorly, tell me that too. I can make an offer based on the vehicle you have rather than assuming that every running car belongs on a private-sale listing or that every high-kilometre vehicle is worthless.
Does a vehicle have to be broken before it can be recycled?
No. The Trout Lake minivan is proof of that. Its owner had a new car, and the old van was ready to go. I did not diagnose it or identify a particular failed part. All I knew about how it drove was that it still ran, though not especially well.
Other calls are different. A vehicle may have a failed engine, a transmission problem, or years of sitting behind a house. Some will not start at all. Tell me what you know about its condition, even if you do not have a mechanic’s diagnosis. “It does not start,” “it rolls but will not run,” or “it drives but I no longer trust it” is useful information.
That helps me decide how to approach the pickup. It also helps me explain the offer before anyone commits to an appointment.
For this van, the owner’s decision was already made. He had replaced it, asked me to come, gathered his belongings, and watched it leave on the truck. The story is about helping him complete that decision.
Can a tow truck take an old car from a Vancouver street?
It depends on the location and whether the truck can reach and load the vehicle safely. The van near Trout Lake was parked across the street from the park, and I found an easy place to park the flat deck. That made this particular street pickup straightforward.
Other East Vancouver streets can be more crowded. Cars may be parked close together, a lane may have limited turning room, or there may be a restriction where the vehicle sits. I need to know those details before I arrive. A photograph showing the car and the space around it can help.
Tell me whether it is on the street, in a driveway, or in a lane. Let me know if another vehicle blocks it, if the tires are flat, or if there is little room for a truck. Those details are more useful than simply saying, “It is easy to get to,” because people picture truck access differently.
I will discuss the pickup based on the actual location. The Trout Lake owner left his van where it was, and I loaded it there.
What if my old vehicle is parked without insurance?
Let me know when you call. That was part of the Trout Lake owner’s situation: his minivan was on the street without insurance, and he wanted it picked up that day. I was available to meet his requested time and transported the van on the flat deck.
Do not drive an uninsured vehicle to meet a tow truck. If yours is parked and ready for removal, explain where it sits and whether I can get the truck alongside it. I can tell you what the pickup would involve.
Your insurance and licence plates are separate matters from the physical pickup. Keep your plates and speak with an ICBC Autoplan broker if you need to cancel or change your insurance. If you are unsure what paperwork you have for the vehicle, tell me before the appointment.
What should I remove from my van before pickup?
Take out anything you want to keep. The owner near Trout Lake did this while we were talking, before I loaded the minivan. After eight years, it was reasonable for him to check it properly.
Look through the glove box, console, door pockets, under the seats, and the cargo area. Garage remotes, documents, tools, sunglasses, and small personal items are easy to overlook. Keep your licence plates as well.
You can have everything ready before I arrive. If you are still checking when I get there, let me know. The point is for you to be comfortable that your belongings are out before the vehicle leaves.
Keys and registration are helpful. If either is missing, mention it when you first contact me. I can explain what information or paperwork is needed for your situation before we arrange a truck.
How do I find out what my old car is worth?
Tell me about the actual vehicle. I will ask for its year, make and model, condition, and location. Let me know whether it starts and rolls, and whether the wheels and major parts are present. Photos can help if there is damage or unusual access.
The van in this story was paid for, but I would not use its payment to quote a different car. A smaller vehicle, a newer vehicle, one with collision damage, or one missing major parts may receive a different offer. Mileage matters, but it does not set the entire value on its own.
An offer should be clear before you arrange pickup. You can then decide whether selling the vehicle to me makes sense for you. If you are comparing that offer with repairing or selling it privately, you have a real figure to consider rather than an advertisement promising a maximum that may not apply.
Towing is free for complete vehicles. If wheels or major parts are missing, removal may cost money. Tell me about missing parts in advance so I can explain any cost before coming out.
When do I get paid for my vehicle?
Jay’s Junk Car Towing pays cash on pickup before loading. I want the offer and the condition of the vehicle understood before the truck arrives.
The owner near Trout Lake had contacted me for help getting the van moved. He did not even know he would be paid until we discussed it. His surprised comment is part of the real story. It is not a script or a promise that every vehicle will receive the same offer.
If you are contacting me about your own car, you can ask about payment right away. Give me the vehicle details, and I will explain the offer along with the pickup. There is nothing wrong with asking that question first, even though this owner happened to care most about getting the van moved that day.
Once you accept the arrangement, take out your belongings and keep your plates. We can deal with the payment and vehicle paperwork before loading.
How does a high-kilometre van get onto the tow truck?
It depends on what the van can do. This one still ran, so I drove it a short distance onto the flat deck. I then secured it for the trip. At our recycling partner’s facility, it could be driven off the truck.
A non-running vehicle would require a different loading approach. A car that does not roll, has flat tires, or has no keys presents a different job again. That is why I ask about its condition when you call. A photo of the vehicle and where it sits can be useful.

The number on this van’s odometer was memorable, but 436,981 km did not make the loading complicated. The practical question was whether it could be moved onto the deck safely. It could.
Please do not start or drive a vehicle you believe is unsafe just to demonstrate that it moves. Describe it honestly, and I can work out the pickup from there.
Where did the Trout Lake minivan go?
I transported it to our recycling partner. That is the destination I can speak to from this job. I loaded the vehicle, secured it, took it to the facility, and it could be driven off the truck there.
I do not own the recycling facility, and I will not claim to have personally dismantled this van or list specific materials recovered from it. The owner asked me to remove his vehicle, and my part was the pickup and transport to the partner facility.
For someone arranging scrap car removal in East Vancouver, it is fair to ask what happens after the tow truck leaves. I can explain where the vehicle is going as part of the pickup conversation.
What made this East Vancouver pickup different?
The owner’s first question was about today, not price. He wanted help moving a van from the street. He told me the time he wanted, sent the address, and I arrived early.
The location across from Trout Lake gave me room to park. Ruby got a walk while I waited. The owner showed me his new car, took his belongings out of the old one, and we spent some time talking and joking. He was surprised to learn he would be paid.
The minivan had been with him since he first came to Canada. Eight years and 436,981 km later, it made its last trip with him as the owner on my flat deck. Those details belong to this job. They are why I can show photographs and tell you exactly how it happened instead of describing an imaginary Vancouver customer.
Another pickup will have a different vehicle, location, and schedule. The part you can expect me to discuss with you is the same: what you have, what I can offer, and how I can remove it.
